πŸŽ™ The Shure SM58LC is one of the popular choices for live sound engineers, who often work at concerts or sporting venues where people talk over each other or other performers. This mic’s low-cut filter allows it to pick out those low noises that are in the background and allows your audience to hear you even in a noisy environment.

🎀 The SM58 features a cardioid polar pattern, which means that it picks up sound from the frontside (front of the mic), and suppresses noise from the backside. The best thing about cardioid pattern is that it reduces ambient noise when you’re recording with loud instruments like drums or guitar amps.

πŸŽ™ The Rode VideoMic pro Compact has a supercardioid polar pattern which means it is always sensitive to the direction from which the sound comes and attenuates sound from other directions. This directional sensitivity improves the sound quality by reducing environmental noise and feedback.

πŸ”‰ The mic’s frequency response is between 40-20,000 Hz making it suitable for noisy environments such as event videography where there may be loud music or passing traffic that could otherwise interfere with your production value.

πŸ”Œ This mic connects to your camera via a 3.5mm mini jack. The advantage of this type of connection is that it will connect to almost any system and work very well. The disadvantage is that you need to get an adapter in order to connect the mic to a DSLR or mirrorless camera, which may not come with your camera.

The Rode VideoMicPro Compact is the perfect microphone for those looking to make a video in a noisy environment. It’s battery-powered and records at an amazing, clean quality with absolutely no interference from noise or other outside factors.

What to look for when choosing the best dynamic microphone for streaming

Connection type

XLR (also known as “balun” or “banana”) is a symmetrical connector typically used for unidirectional microphones and condenser microphones. XLR is used on microphones that will be used in reasonably clean environments, like recording rooms and other studio spaces. It is by far the most common type of connector because it provides good electrical shielding to prevent hum and noise from entering the microphone.

The flexibility of TRS (Tip/Ring/Sleeve) is useful for condenser microphones which pick up sound from a distance. TRS cables are great for long-distance sound recordings because they do not tangle as easily as XLR cables. However, the quality of the sound is less than with XLR, due to electrical noise and lack of shielding.

USB and Firewire are useful for consumer microphones, but aren’t really suited for recording sound. These connections provide poor shielding from electrical noise, meaning you can expect a lot of hissing and hum in your recordings. If you’re looking to buy a microphone that connects via USB, I suggest looking into the Blue Yeti.

Polar Pattern

There are two types of polar patterns for dynamic microphones, omnidirectional and cardioid. Omnidirectional microphones pick up sound from all directions around the microphone, making them ideal for broadcasting or streaming.
Cardioid stands for heart-shaped and is the most popular pattern amongst streamers to avoid feedback issues in a quiet room. A super-cardioid pattern is best for when you are recording in a closed room or for singing. A hypercardioid pattern is good for when you do not want feedback in an open space. A figure-eight pattern is good for close miking when a loud sound source is nearby.

Frequency Response

Frequency Response – This is the measurement used to determine how accurately a microphone can record sound. The higher the frequency response, the better it will pick up sound. However, having a wide frequency response also means that it will not be able to pick up small noises, and may cause feedback problems in noisy environments.
